Roy Hall: Rockabilly’s Unlucky, Unknown Gem
Should you ask an exponent of rockabilly piano to take into account great rockabilly piano players, names like Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, and Big Al Downing probably pop into your head. But there is another player who flirted with, but never really found success. Yet his affect on rockabilly and rock music remains undiminished by his obscurity: Roy Hall.
Hall, born James Faye Hall in Big Stone Gap, Virginia in 1922 approached the verge of fame several times in the career, but they can never quite cross that threshold. He was obviously a natural piano player and just like great rockabilly pioneers, absorbed the influences from the great country and blues players of the south during days gone by. With the chronilogical age of 11, he was getting noticed as being a great piano player and was chosen to relax and play backup behind Uncle Dave Macon on a travelling broadcast of your Grand Ole Opry.
Because of the late 1940s, Hall was fronting a band named the Cohutta Mountain Boys. This guitar rock band recorded “The Dirty Boogie” and several other songs for Fortune Records away from Detroit. Fans of your Brian Setzer Orchestra recognize “The Dirty Boogie” using their 1998 album of the name.
Nothing much came of the people recordings and Hall disappeared off of the music scene (pretty much) until country legend Webb Pierce saw him perform. Hall became Pierce’s pianist and road manager lastly won an offer of his personal using a major record label, Decca Records in 1955. He recorded several rock and rockabilly numbers for Decca. One of the songs he cut within his first Decca session was an obscure number called, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Occurring.” Hall claimed to acquire written the song under the pseudonym, Sonny David, but whether he did you aren’t, he never successfully established any rights going without running shoes and don’t saw any money of royalties from it. That became a large miss naturally when Jerry Lee Lewis has a runaway success with all the song in 1957.
Meanwhile, Decca saw Hall as the second Bill Haley who was also signed to Decca and was of course seeing good results of his own. He cut some good records for Decca including “See Ya Later Alligator” before Haley hit about it. He never saw popular, but ended up getting enough notice to get started having fun with high-powered acts such as Marty Robbins and Hawkshaw Hawkins. Hall also cut a handful of demos for Sam Phillips’ Sun Records, but those never went anywhere either.
Despite never breaking big, Hall’s influence being a steel pianist was deep. None of his rockabilly tracks ever saw any real success, but hearing them from this side of history, one is struck by how good these are. His heavy boogie woogie influence shines through as part of his great piano playing and he certainly knew ways to deliver vocally.
Hall continued working with Webb Pierce for several years and was still playing close to Nashville up until his death 26 years ago. Similar to a number of other rockabilly artists, Hall’s influence and value wasn’t fully appreciated until after his death.
Unfortunately for Hall, he never found fame nor riches. But fortunately for all of us, he left a rich legacy of great recordings who have endured and will always inspire rockabilly fans and musicians.

Pedal Board Flight Cases
If you are reading this article article then you are probably researching home elevators pedal board flight cases. You may be buying pedal board flight case and unsure as to what case would suit you best? In that case then you’ve arrive at the right place. Because there is becoming numerous effects pedal cases available on the market, finding one which suits you as well as can be a difficult process.
I have been previously playing guitar inside of a band within the past few years, playing gigs most weekends and i have changed my effects board more than once to inflate my set up of effects pedals as well as raise the protection advisors on the highway. I am currently by using a 24″ odyssey hard case. However, upon researching flight cases I uncovered that it is hard to seek out relevant information and help towards selecting the best one, therefore I have given some good information that may be helpful to you.
Pedal Board Flight Cases
Pedal board Flight cases are the most effective and sturdy sort of case to shield your pedals. These are a great case when you play a lot of gigs or transport your pedals around frequently they will take a hard beating unlike a soft case. Although the disadvantages are which a pedal board flight case is usually pretty heavy when you have loads of pedals with your put in place and you are therefore more likely to injure yourself carrying it around (e.g hitting your shin of the corner from it!!)
Size
The single most key in investing in a pedal board flight case would be to determine the best size you will need. This is usually a mistake we have personally made before like various guitarists. You must beginning of the process your pedals within a rectangular fashion of two rows, then measure the width and length from the setup. Effects boards range in proportions from 14 by 5 1/2 inches to 32 by 16 inches. By doing this it’s also sensible to allow about a inch across the fringe of the pedals for jack leads and power lead
I’d personally personally recommend investing in a pedal board flight case if you play a lot of gigs or transport your pedals around often, since it offers better protection than any other type of case/bag. Remember, Guitar/ Bass effects pedals are not equipped cheap it’s the same worth selecting a case which will protect your pedals and keep these things in top condition, because of this marketing them at a later date for any good price if you wish to do so.
